Privacy policy

Copyrighted is made by Sandro Gumz, an independent developer. This policy covers the Copyrighted app for iPhone, iPad and Mac, its extensions, and the website copyrighted.app. Questions go to sgumz@me.com.

Nothing. The app doesn't send your photos, their metadata, your Rights Profiles or anything about how you use it to us or to anyone else. We have no server that could receive it. The App Store lists the app as Data Not Collected.

There is no account to create, no advertising, no tracking and no analytics or crash-reporting service built into the app.

To do its job, the app keeps some information locally, on the device where you use it:

• an index of the photos you scanned, with the copyright fields it read and the group each photo is in;
• your Rights Profiles and settings;
• History: a journal of each batch, with what every photo said before and after, so it can be undone;
• the record of photos counted against the free allowance, and whether Pro is unlocked;
• references to the folders you added, so the app can open them again;
• small thumbnails of photos from folders, in a cache you can clear under Settings › Storage.

This lives in the app's own storage and in an App Group container shared only between Copyrighted and its own extensions on the same device. It isn't synced by us. Like other app data, it may be included in your device's backups, which Apple handles under its own terms. Deleting the app deletes it.

If you allow it, the app uses access to your Photos library to:

• read the copyright metadata of the photos you scan, by reading the start of each original;
• show thumbnails;
• save stamped copies and create the album called Copyrighted;
• delete stamped copies when you undo a batch, and delete originals only if you turn on that option. Photos asks you to confirm each deletion.

You can choose Limited access and pick which photos the app sees. You can change your choice at any time in your device's privacy settings. Photos may download thumbnails from iCloud to show them; the app never downloads full originals during a scan.

The app reads and writes only folders you pick yourself, in Files on iPhone and iPad or with the folder picker on a Mac, plus its own Copyrighted folder. It stores a bookmark to each one locally so it can reopen it. Removing a source removes the app's access to it.

• Add Copyright sees only the photos or files you share with it. It writes to them, or saves stamped copies to Photos, as the app does.
• Copyright Info sees only the photos you share with it and reads their metadata. It writes nothing.
• Copyrighted in Messages uses the system photo picker, so it needs no Photos permission and sees only the one photo you pick. It places a stamped copy in the message field. You decide whether to send it, and Apple delivers it like any other message.

A stamped photo carries your copyright details to whoever receives it, which is the point. It also keeps the other metadata it already had, such as the date and, if the photo had one, its location. Copyrighted doesn't remove that.

Purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details. The app asks the App Store whether Pro is unlocked and remembers the answer on your device.

The app doesn't connect to any server of ours. The only network traffic it causes is Apple's: Photos fetching iCloud thumbnails, the App Store handling purchases and ratings, and links you tap to our website or the App Store, which open in your browser.

If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings, Apple may pass us anonymous crash reports. That is Apple's service, under Apple's terms, and you can turn it off at any time.

• copyrighted.app sets no cookies and uses no analytics.
• It loads nothing from other sites. Fonts and images are served from this site.
• The copyright checker reads your photos in your browser. They are never uploaded.
• Like any web server, ours receives your IP address and the page you ask for in order to send it to you. Any server logs are kept only for security and troubleshooting, are not used to identify you, and are not shared.

If you email us, we receive your address and whatever you write, and use them only to reply. We don't add you to any list.

The app collects no data from anyone, including children.

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. If the app ever starts collecting data, this page will say so before it happens.
